All-Staff Chili Lunch & Dessert Bake-Off

Last Tuesday, October 31, an all-staff chili lunch and dessert bake-off was held at the Pomerantz Stage in the Olmsted Center. I had the pleasure of covering this fun event and even interviewed one of the dessert bake-off contestants.

Within the bake-off, there were two categories: spooky treats and cozy fall desserts. The entries in each of these categories were as follows:

Spooky Treats:

  • Nutter Butter Ghosts- Elissa Johnson
  • Spooky Bat Oreo Truffles- Elissa Johnson

  • Gourmet Brown Sugar Cinnamon Pop-Tart Shortbread- Tiffany Hach
  • Apple Crisp Bars- Lila Johnson
  • Pumpkin Cheesecake- Belle Cowden
  • Salted Caramel Chocolate Chip Cookie Bars- Sara Heijerman

Of all the tasty delights, a few winners were chosen:

Spooky Treats:

  • 1st place: Spooky Bat Oreo Truffles
  • 2nd place: Monster Cookies

Cozy Fall Desserts:

  • 1st place: Salted Caramel Chocolate Chip Cookie Bars
  • 2nd place: Gourmet Brown Sugar Cinnamon Pop-Tart Shortbread
  • 3rd place: Apple Crisp Bars

Sussman Lecture

We also covered the 2023 Sussman Lecture. Hosted by the Harkin Institute, New York Times bestselling author Tim Shriver gave a speech titled “Dignity: The Foundation of a New Patriotism” on Thursday, November 2.

I had the opportunity to speak with the institute’s executive director, Matt Reed, on more about the Sussman Lecture. He has newly taken on the position 2 months ago, but he has already been impacted by the importance of the annual lecture that the institute hosts.

The part of Shriver’s lecture that stood out to Reed the most was his presentation of “The Dignity Index.” The index consists of 8 steps, each of which is used to rate the amount of dignity used in a political statement. Shriver pulled quotes from famous leaders and politicians to provide examples, and had the audience rate each quote from 1 to 8.

The Harkin Institute has another influential speaker coming to campus on Wednesday, November 29th. Charlie Cook, with The Cook Political Report, will present an analysis of current-day American politics and the upcoming 2024 presidential election. Attendees can register here.

Our Next Episode

Our next episode is to air on Friday, December 8. Although our feature stories are still in the works, we are researching more into recent staff layoffs at Drake University. One of the layoffs included the extinction of the Media Producer position, which was held by James McNab for 17 years.
